Grow tent kit buying guide: sizes, lights and air

A grow tent kit promises the shortcut: tent, light, fan and filter in one box, matched to work together. For beginners that promise is usually worth it, because the three expensive mistakes are all mismatches: a lamp too weak for the footprint, no real smell control, and a tent taller than the room allows. This guide sizes each part correctly so the kit you buy fits your space, your plant count and your neighbours.

Tent sizes and what fits inside

• 60x60 cm: one to two small plants, ideal first tent, fits in a wardrobe corner. Limited height, train plants early.
• 80x80 cm: two to four plants, the most forgiving beginner size with room to work around the pots.
• 100x100 cm: four to six plants, needs a 400W-class LED and real ventilation; check your power circuit.
• 120x120 cm and up: serious harvests, serious heat and serious smell. Only with a quality filter and a plan for summer temperatures.

Measure twice: tent height plus lamp hangers plus pot height must fit under your ceiling with working room. The classic beginner error is a 200 cm tent in a 210 cm room with no space for the filter inside.

Matching the LED to the footprint

Light need scales with floor area, not plant count. As a working rule, 60x60 runs well on 100 to 150 real watts, 80x80 on 200 watts, 100x100 on 400 watts, and 120x120 on 500 to 600 watts. Real watts from the wall, not the model number, which is marketing. Full-spectrum LED with dimming beats a bigger blurple panel: dim for seedlings, full power for flowering, and less heat stress in summer.

Air and smell: the non-negotiable part

Ventilation does three jobs: removes heat, refreshes CO2, and pushes air through the carbon filter that keeps the grow discreet. Size the extractor to exchange the tent volume every one to two minutes, and buy the filter from a brand with a stated lifespan, not an unbranded cylinder. A small circulating fan inside prevents mould far better than any spray. If a kit skimps anywhere, it is usually here, and upgrading the filter later costs more than buying it right.

Beginners budget for the lamp and forget the air. Veterans do it the other way round, because heat and smell end grows, dim light only shrinks them.
