Bong buying guide: glass, silicone and percolators

Height, thickness, percolators and joints explained. Buy the right bong once instead of three wrong ones.

By Jonas Lindqvist Quality and Laboratory Lead Published October 7, 2026 4 min read

Most smokers own three bongs: the cheap one that broke, the pretty one that never worked well, and the right one they should have bought first. This guide makes you skip the first two. Glass, silicone, percolators, joints and size, each explained in buying terms, so the next bong is the last one for a long time.

Glass vs silicone vs acrylic

Borosilicate glass is the standard for a reason: neutral taste, easy to inspect for dirt, and smooth when thick enough. Five millimetre walls survive everyday knocks; three millimetre looks the same online and dies on tile. Silicone wins where glass fears to go: festivals, travel, clumsy friends. It never breaks and cleans in the dishwasher, but it holds smells over time and never tastes as clean as glass. Acrylic is the budget shelf: fine for a first piece, outgrown within months by anyone who smokes regularly.

What percolators actually do

A percolator splits smoke into smaller bubbles through water, cooling it and catching ash. More diffusion means a smoother, cooler hit and less coughing, at the cost of more drag and more parts to clean. A simple diffused downstem suits beginners perfectly; honeycomb and tree percs serve experienced smokers chasing flavour. Ignore percolator counts as a quality metric: one well-made perc beats three badly welded ones every time.

Size, joints and must-check details

  • Height 25 to 35 cm is the sweet spot: enough water and air path for cooling, short enough to handle and store. Above 45 cm you are buying furniture.
  • Joint size 14.5 mm vs 18.8 mm decides your accessory world: bowls, pre-coolers and adapters must match. 18.8 mm is the safer, more compatible standard.
  • Ice notches are cheap to add and genuinely useful: two cubes smooth a harsh blend without any extra part.
  • Base shape matters more than looks: a wide beaker base forgives elbows; a straight tube tips if you breathe near it.
Thickness is the spec sellers hide and buyers should demand. Ask for millimetres before you ask for the price.

Cleaning: the habit that decides everything

A maintained 60-euro bong outperforms a neglected 200-euro one within a month. Hot water after sessions, isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt monthly, and pipe cleaners for the downstem keep glass tasting like glass. If that routine sounds like too much, buy silicone or a small piece with few chambers. Honesty about cleaning saves more money than any sale.
