Buying cannabis seeds: 7 mistakes beginners make

Most bad harvests are decided at checkout, not in the tent. The seven mistakes first-time buyers repeat, and a short checklist that avoids all of them.

By Jonas Lindqvist Quality and Laboratory Lead Published October 11, 2026 8 min read

Ask experienced growers where their worst run went wrong and few will blame the tent. The story usually starts earlier, at checkout: the wrong seed type for the space, a strain picked on THC percentage alone, or ten seeds ordered for a season that fits three plants. Seeds are cheap compared to months of electricity and attention, so the buying decision deserves more care than it usually gets. Here are the seven mistakes we see beginners repeat, in the order they cost the most.

1. Buying on THC percentage alone

A high THC number sells packs, but it tells you almost nothing about the harvest you will enjoy. Potency is dose per gram, not character, and two flowers tested at the same figure routinely smoke very differently because their terpene profiles differ. Beginners who chase the biggest number often end up with a long-flowering, finicky plant they were not ready for. Read the flowering time, the plant height and the difficulty rating first. Treat THC as a tiebreaker between two strains that both fit your setup, never as the reason to pick one.

2. Ignoring seed type

Feminized, autoflowering, regular and CBD is not marketing decoration, it is behaviour. Regular seeds can grow male plants you will have to remove. Photoperiod feminized plants need a strict 12-hour night to flower. Autoflowers run on their own clock and forgive light leaks but not heavy stress. Our autoflower versus feminized guide covers the full comparison, but the short version stands: match the seed type to your light control and your patience before you fall in love with a strain name.

3. No plan for the space

A strain described as tall and stretchy in a 60 cm cupboard is a harvest lost in advance. Check the expected indoor height and the flowering weeks, then compare them honestly with your tent, your balcony season and your electricity budget. One plant with room to breathe beats three crowded ones in almost every beginner setup. If you have not measured your space, close the shop tab and measure it now. The seeds will still be there tomorrow.

4. Skipping the certificate

A seed shop that cannot show you a lab report for its flower range is asking for trust it has not earned. Certificates of analysis tell you what is actually in the product line you are buying into: cannabinoid content, terpene panels and contaminant screening. Our guide to reading a certificate of analysis shows exactly which fields carry weight and which omissions should stop a purchase. Make this a habit with every new breeder, not just the first one.

5. Bargain hunting without checking the breeder

The cheapest pack on the page is cheap for a reason often enough to matter: old stock with weak germination, unstable genetics, or a white-label pack with a famous name on it. Price per seed means nothing if half the pack never sprouts. Buy named breeders with a track record, check that the shop states a germination policy, and read a few harvest reports from other growers before committing. A few euros saved at checkout is the most expensive saving in growing.

6. Ordering more than the season allows

Ten seeds feel like value until seven of them sit in a drawer for two years losing vigour. Seeds keep best cool, dark and dry, but they are still a living product with a shelf life. Order for the run in front of you plus one spare for the seedling that damps off, and reorder fresh next season. Your future self, opening a drawer of tired two-year-old seeds, will thank you.

7. Forgetting the law

Seeds are sold as collectibles and souvenirs in many markets, and germinating them is illegal in many countries. Rules differ wildly between neighbours and change often, so check our legal status by country page for where you live before you order. Never assume the rules travel with the parcel. This mistake costs more than a lost harvest.

A checklist before checkout

  • Seed type matches your light control and patience: autoflower for simple and fast, feminized photoperiod for control and training.
  • Height and flowering weeks fit your measured space and season, with one spare seed for losses.
  • Breeder is named, the shop states a germination policy, and lab reports are published and readable.
  • THC percentage was the last thing you compared, not the first.
  • Your country's rules checked on our legal status page, and you are of legal purchasing age, 21+ where we ship.

Get these five right and the grow itself becomes the easy part. Fresh Canna stocks feminized, autoflowering, regular and CBD genetics from over a hundred seed banks, with discreet EU shipping and real human support. Start with our beginner strains collection if choice paralysis has set in. And whatever you buy: start low and go slow, never drive or operate machinery, keep everything locked away from children and pets, and speak to a doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
